Episode 7: Covid Physician Burnout with Dr. Jozi McGowan

Burnout can affect us at any stage in our medical journey. For so many it starts in residency, but what if there was a way to be better prepared before you ever get to residency? That’s exactly what Dr. Jozi McGowan helps medical students to do, so it came as a bit of a shock when she realized that she too was experiencing burnout.

Dr. Jozi received her medical degree and then went into medical education. There she helps counsel and mentor students to give them information and perspective about their aspirations.

While she isn’t practicing per se, there is still a ton of pressure and when Covid happened she lost all of her typical coping mechanisms. Her colleagues and husband noticed the differences in her and she knew she had to make a change.

As luck would have it, I’d reached out to her through LinkedIn and as our relationship grew, she found the coping mechanisms she needed. The Burntout to Badass came out and she was determined to be in the course.

Listen in to hear her whole story and what life is like now that she’s found new ways to cope with the burnout she’s found in medical education.

You become the back burner and it sort of slips away and you don’t’ even realize how much you are going through the burnout rabbit hole.
